“Get the Facts” on
Job Creation in Indiana
Over 100,000 more Hoosiers are working than when
Governor Daniels took office in 2005 and Indiana’s
unemployment rate is at its lowest point in six
years.
Fulfilling a campaign promise, Governor Daniels
established the Indiana Economic Development Corporation,
a new public-private business attraction organization,
to aggressively bring businesses and good-paying
jobs to Indiana.
Since its inception, the Indiana Economic Development
Corporation has completed 436 competitive projects
with businesses that have committed to create 52,605
new jobs and invest more than $13.76 billion in
their Indiana operations with an average annual
salary of more than $42,000, or about $7000 more
per year than the average Hoosier salary.
Nearly two-thirds of all projects completed involve
expansions of existing Indiana businesses.
In 2006, Indiana was the only state to attract
three new auto manufacturing facilities, as Honda,
Toyota and Cummins announced major new plants.
Honda was the first company to locate on a certified “shovel-ready
site”, a Daniels administration practice
of certifying locations as ready for development
where state agencies work to fast-track permits – cutting
the time off of the permitting process by one-third.
Governor Daniels’ legislation authorizing
regional venture capital funds has attracted $170
million to Indiana-based life sciences and agriculture
funds in the forefront of research on breast cancer,
pediatric breathing, heart conditions, and food
and agricultural products.
Under Governor Daniels’ Buy Indiana Plan
state government is spending nearly $1 billion
more with companies employing thousands of Hoosiers. Currently,
84 cents of every tax dollar is spent with Indiana
companies – up from 62 cents prior to 2005.
